Principal Bioprocess Automation Engineer

Principal Bioprocess Automation Engineer

Purpose: As a recognized automation expert within our division/business unit, you will play a pivotal role in leading teams and driving financial impact. Your expertise will be instrumental in defining, deploying, starting up, and supporting process platform equipment. You will be a key technical system owner for automation packages supporting Biologics operations, including rFVIII Operations, mAb Operations, and Cell Therapy, on a global scale. This position is part of the global organization, Process Engineering & Technology (PE&T) group located in Berkeley, CA, as well as in Germany (Wuppertal, Leverkusen & Wuppertal). You will be accountable for the automation package that supports the Biologics and will lead projects of larger scope, often being called upon by peers for guidance. Your role will also involve mentoring others both within and outside the department, directing project or discipline teams, and supporting the delivery of bioprocess equipment to Bayers global network. You will be responsible for the automation system designs and translating user requirements into technical solutions for complex systems. Your expertise will contribute significantly to the continuous improvement of processes and the achievement of business or technical goals.

Your Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Define, deploy, startup, and support process platform equipment;
• Lead crossfunctional teams to deliver solutions requiring expertise from other business areas;
• Partner with Biologics to support rFVIII Operations, mAb Operations, and Cell Therapy on a global level;
• Lead projects of larger scope and provide guidance to peers;
• Direct project or discipline teams and mentor others within and outside the department;
• Serve as the technical system owner for automation packages and user interface to translate user requirements to technical solutions;
• Ensure compliance with internal and external technical regulatory requirements and good engineering practices;
• Present and communicate projectrelated tasks to peers and management for overall coordination;
• Make decisions that influence the goals of the business unit and produce results that contribute to business or technical goals;
• The primary location for this role is Berkeley, CA. Relocation assistance may be offered for this role. Remote/hybrid working arrangement will not be accommodated.

Who You Are:

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

• Must have one of the following:
  • Bachelors Degree in an Engineering discipline or similar field with 10 years of relevant experience in industrial bioprocess production (biopharmaceutical preferred); OR
  • Masters Degree with 48 years of relevant experience industrial bioprocess production (biopharmaceutical preferred);
• Superior knowledge and extensive experience with cGMP;
• Extensive experience in Automation industry with experience in Design, Construction, and Commissioning;
• Relevant experience with capital projects;
• Deep knowledge of standard industrial automation technologies, DCSs, PLCs, SCADAs, and HMI programming;
• Strong knowledge of control system philosophy, control system standards, instrumentation configuration, programming, and design;
• Strong working experience with ISA 88 and ISA 95 levels;
• Strong knowledge of industrial networks including Ethernet networks, Profibus, and OPC communication;
• Expertise in DeltaV DCS (or similar);
• Superior ability to analyze and troubleshoot process operations;
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment as a leader/facilitator and team member;
• Resultdriven and able to deal with ambiguity;
• Willingness to execute projects at remote locations with different geographic settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Relevant industry experience in a cGMP Biopharmaceutical industry setting.
• Relevant experience with Cell and Gene Therapy.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $136,929.60 to $205,394.40. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Other benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. If selected for this role, the offer may vary based on market data/ranges, an applicants skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
